The race is on for Britain to transition to a decarbonised economy. The government has set ambitious targets for renewable energy to be reached by 2035 and must attract considerable sums of private investment in order to achieve them. This will also involve the construction of new HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) transmission lines. But while there is a consensus that the system needs to change to accommodate more intermittent renewables, the government has faced pushback on its plans for market design.
